Mungo Jerry came to prominence on 23rd of May 1970 when he played at the now legendry Hollywood Music Festival sharing the stage with iconic artists like Grateful Dead, Black Sabbath, Free and Traffic to name but a few.
Mungo’s biggest hit ‘In The Summertime’, which he composed under his real name Ray Dorset, was the very first maxi single in the world and was released the day before performing at the Hollywood Festival. Mungomania began after this and ‘In the Summertime’ went to number 1 in the UK selling 72,500 in just one day and topped the charts worldwide reaching number 1 in 26 countries. To date ‘In the Summertime’ has sold more than 30 million copies worldwide and has become an international summer anthem. Ray also had success when reggae pop superstar Shaggy covered the song in 1995 reaching number 5 in the UK singles chart and number 1 in the USA.
Ray wrote two number 1 UK singles for Mungo Jerry and one for Kelly Marie, had two top 20 albums and had 7 hits worldwide that were not released in the UK.
Today Mungo Jerry plays major international blues and Jazz festivals performing his own brand of rock raw blues alongside some of his many hits including of course ‘In The Summertime’.
