By all accounts Roddy Stone shouldn’t be alive right now. The quagmire of surreal events this man from Corby has survived defies any sense of logic. To the meek, the chances of survival would be slim – but for this 20-something soul, it’s all about living life to the max. It’s almost as if Roddy Stone has created his own action adventure comedy-cum-fantasy film – living the dream and life that only the chosen few can experience. These are stories that not even Irvine Welsh or JRR Tolkien could make up.
After turning down the chance to blow up a cow with a bazooka in Johannesburg, South Africa, Roddy avoided being shot in the face unlike his (then) agent by the skin of his teeth. But nothing could prepare Roddy for the still unsolved mystery of the bloodied New York hotel room. Waking up stark bollock naked with his bathroom looking like a scene from the best slasher movie you’ve ever seen, but totally unscathed himself, the only clues were a broken beer bottle on the floor and the fact that Stone was last seen chatting to a footballer from the New York Giants earlier that night in a bar. Needless to say, the blood mystery has never been solved.
On another visit to America Roddy shaved his body, covered himself in margarine and went on a shoplifting spree.
He laughs: “I came up with the idea that the best way to shoplift was to shave every bit of hair off your body and rub yourself in margarine and no one can catch you, they would just slip off.”
His plan worked – but in a Spinal Tap moment, Roddy left an unsuspecting shopping mall with little more than a box of peanut butter chocolate bars!
And then there’s the time when Roddy ran riot with his mates in Spain – trashing hotels and wrecking cars. It almost went wrong –after being caught in the act they were thrown into a Spanish jail and refused bail, but Stone survived to face another heady day by bribing a judge.
Through all the hedonism, Roddy has a romantic side to him too. Showing just how much he loved his former lover’s parrots, Stone glued his recently shaved pubes on the heads of her pets to give them the Afro look. The romance didn’t last long after that.
You see Roddy Stone is one of life’s real people who lives his every moment like his last.
And what makes him a true legend is because this man fronts Viking Skull – the UK’s most exciting heavy rock band to hit a stage for aeons. It makes sense for such a rock ‘n’ roll heretic to front a band driven by careless abandon and alcohol-fuelled riffs hotter than the flames of Beelzebub.
“You only get one life and you gotta live it like you’re in the movies,” proclaims the frontman. “This is the best way to live your life, you only get one chance!”
Showing Metallica’s James Hetfield the proper way to use pyrotechnics, Roddy once burnt down his local venue but survived to record a low key released six-track teaser CD sampling Viking Skull’s heavy rock prowess. It’s fast become a true underground classic – and is now in its fourth pressing.
Starting out with small club shows, Viking Skull moved onto major tours and shows with HIM and Alice Cooper. These tours climaxed with a triumphant slot at this year’s Download Festival held at the home of metal – Donington Park – where they amassed the third biggest crowd attendance and fourth fastest-selling merch line. Right now Viking Skull are proving to be an unstoppable juggernaut of thundering excess. The fact that Roddy Stone fronts them just makes everything that little bit more hazardous. Heavy metal just got dangerous again.
