Britain , 2005: Music is terrible, the nation’s youth numbed by an endless procession of polite boys with pianos and poseurs partying like it’s 1984. But somewhere in West London , something is stirring: an electrifying combination of The Beatles, The Smiths and The Stone Roses. In an age when it seemed that there was nothing left to believe in, The Red Kites bring you hope.
Friends since school, The Red Kites conjure magic from basic ingredients. The righteous thwack of Barry Thompson’s drums, the popped-out soul of singer Al Clay’s bass and the chiming guitar work of Moray McLaren all mesh to spectacular effect.
But it’s the songs that make this three-piece so special: tart, acidic guitar-pop laced with real intelligence and drive; lyrics that hold an implicit challenge not to be mediocre. The Red Kites relay universal truths in glorious melody and give Britain ’s declining musical stock a well-aimed, and timely, kick up the arse.
