The Nautical Theme was formed in May 2003 with the idea of playing at the Isle of Wight rock festival. Wight Noise, a youth music organisation on the Isle of Wight, had set up auditions to give young bands the chance to open the Isle of Wight rock festival 2003. David Careless (lead ocal/trumpet/percussion), Andy Booth (drums), David Granshaw (guitar/vocals), Chris Dobbas (sax/vocals) and Tom Day (bass) came together to form ‘The Nautical Theme’ with just a couple of weeks before the auditions. The boys quickly organised as many practices as they could before the auditions and got together a set of three original compositions. These three songs along with a good performance were enough for them to win the fantastic chance of opening the Isle of Wight Festival.
Since opening the Isle of Wight Festival the band has developed its unique blend of light rock and funk with world music influences with considerable success. Their original material, accomplished musicianship and infectious enthusiasm on stage has lead to numerous gigs including the NEC in Birmingham twice, many private functions and regular slots at well known Island venues including Celebrate Ventnor Day and Ventnor Winter Gardens when on both occasions they supported local band “The Bees”. When they are not gigging the band spend most of their time writing new material and making their sets as tight as they can.
Recently the band have won the final of “band wars” in Southampton, and reached the finals of the National Festival of Music for Youth in London where they gained an Outstanding Performance Award at the Queen Elizabeth Hall in early July, a performance sufficient to gain them a place at NFMFY’s proms at the Royal Albert Hall where they played on 9 th November 2004. They have also played with acclaim at Guilfest 2004, the three-day music festival held in Guildford in July where they are again playing this year
