It’s over before you can even take a swig of your pint. 17 minutes of pure, joyous, rock-n-roll punk-a-tude. Music from an era where a sweat-stained CBGB’s in New York circa-1977 was the place, and Joey Ramone was king – reincarnated into a 4-piece called The Mutts who whip it off with envious ease.
It all began in a small town just outside Glasgow where singer Chris was born (hence the Scottish vocal twang). Meanwhile in coastal Felixstowe, Bryan and Sam were learning to tune their guitars, and Adam was starting his path to Keith Moon-dom in Northampton . These four paths crossed in the new rock-n-roll capitol of Brighton , and from there The Mutts were born. “It was basically a reaction to all the shite out there,” says Front-Mutt Chris, “the whole rock-and-roll thing was about the hype, and nothing about the music. That’s where we come in.”
Word gets around quickly, and a bevy of supports for some of the hottest names in the biz came just as fast… tours with The Please back in November 2002, The Casanovas in February 2003, plus slots with The Raveonettes, The Catheters and Radio 4 has kicked off an unrivalled buzz about the band. April sees The Mutts supporting American rock gods The Warlocks at their Brighton NME-sponsored gig. It’s a lot for any band to notch up on their belts, but as Chris says, “We live to gig. As far as I’m concerned, we could tour forever and that’s it. I just wanna play.”
The Mutts recently set up their own label, Majesty of Rock, and will be releasing their debut double A-side single, ‘Hostage’ / ‘Obvious’ on 12 th May – released on limited edition, super-sexy, clear 7” vinyl.
