Richard John Thompson, voted one of the top four acts at Guilfest 2004 by
The Surrey Advertiser, returns to the festival’s Uncut stage on July 17 th 2005 with full band and a first time preview of songs from his next album.
“I’m really looking forward to showcasing a diverse set with the band this year,” says Richard, who has supported ex-Ultravox frontman Midge Ure, Geno Washington and has worked with Martin McAloon from Prefab Sprout.
Whereas last year Richard focused on mellower tracks from his debut album, Hidden Daylight, his latest songs, such as the thrash-out rock of ‘Sleep’ and the theatrical ‘Excuses To Fall,’ are bigger, more extravagant, and built around prominent melodies.
“We’ve arranged songs in a way to draw in the audience while keeping the music free of clichés. The style is still melodic rock, but now it sounds much more spontaneous and dynamic.”
With influences including Ryan Adams, Bright Eyes and Rufus Wainwright, the 20-year-old rhythm guitarist and pianist from County Durham will be playing alongside band members Dean Pearson on drums, Tom Pattison, bass guitar, and Athol Cassidy, lead guitar.
