Encyclopedia is an explosive, electronic power pop duo combining the sound of the retro Nintendo consol games with a fresh indie rock approach.
Ben Wood (Vocals/Guitar) and Oliver Herdsman (Guitar/Vocals) met at Yeovil College whilst studying music in 2000. Sharing a common interest in punk rock music they subsequently formed several bands over the following 3 years that were successful on the local music scene. They have consistently written material together and when in early 2004, a local promoter booked American pop punk pioneers Squirtgun, Ben secured a support slot for the two of them, despite not having an existing band. Thus Encyclopedia was created in the 3 weeks prior to the show.
Using various synthesisers and sequencers, Encyclopedia creates a kitsch but cool eighties style backing track which contrasts perfectly with the edginess of the guitars and vocals, resulting in the kind of joyous riot that might well have ensued if The Undertones ‘Perfect Cousin’ had got The Human League in to advise him.
With their sights firmly set on finding a wider audience, they started recording their first CD in September with Jon Sweet (Colin Blunstone, Gordon Haskell) producing. The result was the five track demo EP ‘Young Hearts’ which presents the Encyclopedia trademark sound and their song writing potential.
In early 2005, prestigious US label Deep Elm Records approached Encyclopedia requesting the inclusion of the track ‘Yeah, Shave It’ on their forthcoming Volume 3 of ‘This Is Indie Rock’ compilation series which showcases the hottest new indie rock artists throughout the world. This will be released worldwide on October 11 th.
Shortly after the approach from Deep Elm the band won both the heat and final of the Exeter Cavern Singles Club, with the prize of recording and releasing a single. This debut single ‘You Can Say No (But I Hope You Don’t)’ is scheduled for release in July 2005.
Encyclopedia have since been recording again and have just finished mixing a 6 track EP provisionally titled ‘18 Forever’. They are now actively seeking a label to release this EP both sides of the Atlantic .
The remainder of this year will see Encyclopedia taking their euphoric party/rock show on tours throughout the UK and Ireland . Fun is guaranteed!
