Daybreak produce a varied and rhythmically exciting selection of 'mood songs'. Strong, gripping vocals from Andy Martin provide intensity to lyrics which pile association upon association with frequent references to emotive emotions. Kyle Hammond's intricate lead guitar work helps the music climb to an affecting crescendo, at which point powerful percussion from Dan Ryan and demanding bass-lines by Andy New, take the listener away with it.
With this in mind, what was the aim? To write powerful and emotional music with splashes of conflicting influences including Oasis, Metallica, Nirvana, Coldplay, Radiohead and The Smiths. To have no lies of secret underground bands acting as an influence to the Daybreak movement. To be a band that could continually break "pop idol" nonsense whilst raising a glass to maintaining mainstream credibility. To play without the need to mirror London-based post-punk action, boys with guitars and edgy fringes. Being what they are is important and to not live up to any expectations previously laid down by a so-called "rock and roll" establishment is essential.
It was back in 2003 when Daybreak made their live debut. They quickly became established on the local gigging circuit and the live CD began to make waves across Sheffield. The CD received rave reviews from numerous London based management companies, describing song writing duo Andy Martin and Kyle Hammond as "maybe the next Morrissey and Marr" and "Coldplay with balls". Additionally, the band won “Demo of the Month” in Sandman Magazine. The stand out track "Find Me" won “Mp3 of the Month” on www.Soundaloud.com and more recently "All Time Mp3 of the Month”. On the back of this Daybreak toured Sheffield, Birmingham and Jersey in the summer of 2003. Late 2003 saw an intense amount of gigging taking in Leeds, Liverpool and Sheffield. Support slots with The Keys and Snow Patrol helped the band really push themselves forward.
However, 2004 was the year in which Daybreak really hit their stride. Andy New (formerly of long serving Sheffield indie band, Skydiva) joined on bass duties and significantly helped mould them into a band rather than a collection of individuals. The band headlined the "Devonshire Green Jam" an outdoor festival in the summer, and performed in front of Steve Lamacq at Sunday Roast, who openly enjoyed the set. For the first time, the band started to write songs collectively. Daybreak recorded their first professional EP "On The Verge" at 2fly Studios in Sheffield. The lead track "Chasing The Moon" won “Mp3 of the Month” on www.soundaloud.com and also the EP won "Demo of the Month" in Sandman Magazine, the second time they had achieved this accolade. The launch party was described as one of the best and most intense performances ever seen locally. The EP also attracted the attention London management companies, again and more recently Liverpool based record label Chromium Records who rated it 88/100 - their highest ever assessment for a demo. Rebecca William’s head of A&R for Chromium stated "overall an outstanding demo brimming with excellence and innovation". “Chasing The Moon” was included on a compilation of theirs, “Unsung Heroes”. Daybreak rounded off 2004 by playing a massive show in their hometown Sheffield at Leadmill to a crowd of 400 people.
Early 2005 saw Daybreak play storming gigs all over the country in Mexborough, Leeds, Birmingham, Manchester and Leicester as well as supporting 80’s indie legends House of Love at Leadmill on their Sheffield tour date. “Start Again” from their “On The Verge EP” has recently been played on XFM (London) and Hallam FM. They were hand-picked to play with the La's (Who wrote "There she goes") on one of the three dates of their reunion tour again at at sold out Leadmill.
With the release of their new “Cut to the Chase EP” at a special sell out show at The Room in Sheffield, a high profile appeance at Guilfest Festival alongside acts such as; Paul Weller, Echo & the Bunnymen, Proclaimers and The Subways (to name a few), gigs all over the country and a distribution deal in America, watch out for Daybreak as they are surely set to explode big time this year.
