Clipper formed in late 1999, in Newport, South Wales. Since their first gig, Clipper have performed over 100 gigs, in various venues across Wales and England, headlining shows, as well as performing with other high-profile bands such as Lockdown Project, Plastic Heroes, Soledad Brothers, B-Movie Heroes and Ten Pole Tudor. They can regularly be seen across the country in venues such as Barfly, Newport City Live Arena, The Legendary TJ's, Dublin Castle, The Bull & Gate and Sound (Leicester Square), and this constant gigging has earned them a very strong local and national following.
Word has indeed got around about Clipper and, if proof were needed, James Dean Bradfield has even spoken about them during a recent interview on BBC2. Apparently, Bradfield had caught the band when they played in Cardiff months before.
Their Debut single My Tendency, shortly due for release via Daredream records, was recently recorded at Rockfield Studios, and was produced by Simon Dawson (whose credits include The Stone Roses and Black Sabbath). The single has received airplay, and praise, on various radio stations including Radio 1 and Radio Ceredigion. Radio 1's website described the single as 'Soulful, impassioned grunge balladry from Clipper, a band seemingly out to provide an answer to the question 'Tell me now clart, who are Newport's answer to Pearl Jam?'.
Several Clipper tracks have also been used in new documentaries about the Red Hot Chilli Peppers and Nickelback.
Previous independently released demo E.P's also received praise both online and in various local papers, and Clipper have been voted band of the month on globalcharts100.com, an American based website. The band were screened on showcase T.V in April 2002. One song - S.W.A.G T.I.M was previously voted song of the week on BURBS.co.uk, a British based rock website. This song was also commissioned for worldwide release on a compilation C.D "Sounds emerging Vol 1" through Matchbox recordings, who described Cippers sound as 'leftfield alternative Indie rock at it's best with some powerful guitar work and big vocals. A tuneful Therapy with driving guitars and a positive vibe. This is serious rock that rocks like hell but retains an underlying pop sensibility. A massive and melodic piece of music leading you into Indie heaven'.
The name 'clipper' was chosen because during the early stages of the band, when singer Matt and guitarist Tony were writing the first few songs, they were smoking a lot of 'rollies', and along with a continuous supply of tea and alcohol, their 'clipper' lighter became a more essential item for the survival of the band than Tony's guitar or Matt's lyric sheets.
